Newcomers of San Antonio ... from the President
Dear Newcomer Friends,
Newcomers of San Antonio began in 1981 with five founding
members. Over the years Newcomers has
grown, and this year Newcomers of San Antonio has a membership of over three
hundred. We are a non-profit social
organization with the purpose of helping new residents meet and develop
friendships with others, become acquainted with their new city, and encourage
community involvement.
Even though our group is large, there are several smaller
Special Interest Groups such as Bridge,
Canasta, Bunco, In Stitches, Haute Flash (cooking), Footloose (outings to
places of interest in San Antonio and the surrounding area), Wine Tasting,
Retirees, just to name a few. There is always opportunity to start
new groups, and this year three new groups are forming: Decorating, Antiques
and Walkabout. We have monthly
luncheons and coffees, and planned social events throughout the year. Sharing these common interests helps members
develop long lasting friendships and become acquainted with their new home in a
fun and diverse way. Our motto is “Bloom
Where You Are Planted” which epitomizes the results for those who
choose to join our warm and friendly organization.
A good way to discover some of San Antonio’s best
restaurants is to attend the Newcomers Luncheons. We enjoy having our luncheons at different locations each month,
and we also enjoy the Programs that are provided at each luncheon. The luncheons are held on the first Thursday
of every month, except July when we take a vacation and no luncheon is held. Our monthly Coffees are held on the third
Thursday of the month in member’s homes, and provide a means of visiting and
meeting newer members in a smaller setting.
As a way of involvement in the community, two charities are
selected each year, each for a six month period. Programs are presented by these charities as a means to inform
our membership of special needs in San Antonio. Members often form special bonds with these organizations and
become lifetime supporters of their projects.
Membership is open to anyone within two years of their
arrival in San Antonio. Membership is
extended regardless of race, color, creed, marital status or gender. Yearly dues are $30, and the club year is
from June 1st-May 31st. You can get membership
application information from this website or voicemail is available at
210-787-2687.
Sincerely,
Pam Ashbaugh, President 2008/2009
